Ready for Mahi: Confidence, Budgeting, Direction

When Mauora first joined the Te Whānau o Waipareira Employment Hub, she described herself as shy, reserved, and unsure of her next steps. “I was a very shy person before I came here,” she reflects. But through the workshops co-delivered with Zeducation, things began to shift.

The programme, part of a partnership between Waipareira and Zeducation, focuses on helping Māori and Pasifika rangatahi build the skills they need to step confidently into work or further education. Since February 2025, more than 40 rangatahi have taken part in short, practical workshops covering communication, teamwork, digital literacy, financial literacy, and more.

For Mauora, the highlight has been learning time management and budgeting. “We’re like 16, 17—what are we doing with our money? Spending it on lollies,” she laughs. Now, with simple tools and money confidence, she’s planning ahead rather than reacting.

Beyond skills, the biggest change has been personal. “They’ve actually helped me open up and become a more bubbly person,” Mauora says. She’s learned how to step out of her comfort zone—something that will help her not only in the classroom or workplace but in life.

The challenge these programmes address is real: many rangatahi engaging with the hub are not in employment, education, or training. Some face the pull of negative environments, from benefit dependence to gang pressure. The solution is direction, confidence, and practical skills. That’s what Waipareira and Zeducation aim to provide, anchored in Māori and Pasifika values and delivered in ways that are safe, engaging, and relatable.

For Mauora, it’s working. “Everything I’ve learned here is new to me,” she says. “It’s about getting out of your comfort zone so you can actually do things you want to thrive for.”

Her closing words are simple but powerful: “I want to thank Waipareira Trust for everything they’ve given me and all the chances that I see in front of me.”
